Diana and Jim Jessie lived aboard, raced, and cruised Nalu IV, a cold-molded, custom Lapworth, for 22 years, sailing over 120,000 miles. They have visited 62 countries in the course of a circumnavigation, a race from Acapulco to Manila, which they won, and a North Pacific cruise home via the Bering Sea. Diana and Jim’s current pet is Boca the cat, a black domestic shorthair, who has traveled 40,000 miles by sail and power. He recognizes “cat” in Spanish, Tagalog, Japanese, Cantonese and Russian. He does his best to ignore it in English. Their next pet, Jim’s choice, Diana predicts will be some sort of “hairy” dog. She is famous among their cruising friends for her ever handy dog cookies. Presently they are restoring a Grand Banks Alaskan 53. They bought her in Maryland intending to take her on her own bottom to California. The fuel tanks were in such bad condition they shipped her to Ensenada, jury-rigged a fuel system, and brought her to San Francisco Bay. Naming her M/V Nalu, they plan to return to cruising as soon as the boat is ready for the open ocean. • Current Questions

Diana
Jessie is a boating journalist who has written several books including,
“Basic Cruising”, ”Cruising Woman’s Advisor: Hot
to Prepare for the Voyaging Life”, and “Cruising with Your
Four-Footed Friends: The Basic of Boat Travel with Your Cat or Dog.”
She is the editor for two Chapman Nautical guides – one for Power
and one for Sailboats. She is a contributing editor and writes a monthly
column for 48 0 North and has written many articles published in all the
major marine publications.
