Luhrs Fuel Tank Alert Editor’s
note: The following notice involving possible problems with
aluminum fuel tanks on 1988 and 1989 Luhrs Alura 35 models
was sent to the BoatUS Consumer Protection Bureau by Luhrs
Corp. According to James J. Shea, Luhrs’ marketing manager, “We
have contacted the original owners, but as you can guess, many
of these boats are now in their second or third round of ownership.” Because
of the passage of time, not all Alura 35 owners have been located,
he said.
Luhrs Corp. of St. Augustine, FL, recently discovered that
a correction called for in a 1991 Service Bulletin relating
to 1988 and 1989 Luhrs Alura 35 model boats may not have been
performed on every Luhrs Alura 35 model involved.
Luhrs Corp.
is currently conducting a campaign to contact all 1988 and
1989 Luhrs
Alura 35 owners with hull numbers HUNAL070I788
through HUNAL129L989 to determine if the Alura 35’s fuel
tank platform drainage holes were bonded over or located in
a way that does not permit drainage.
In all, 32 Alura 35s were involved in the Luhrs Corp. service
campaign. The company has no repair records for the following
boats:
HUNAL074I788
HUNAL081A888
HUNAL096E888
HUNAL097F888
HUNAL112I889
HUNAL113I889
HUNAL120K889
HUNAL125L989
HUNAL128A989
If the 1991 inspection or service was not performed, it is
possible that water may accumulate on the fuel tank platform
and, given prolonged contact, may cause the fuel tank to corrode.
This could result in the release of fuel vapors or fuel into
the tank compartment which could be ignited and cause injury
to person or property.
If you have an Alura with one of the above-listed hull numbers
or have a question, please contact the Luhrs Corp. Customer
