Chesapeake Bay boating family has been used to a quick ride to Dobbins Island and Horse Farm. Moving boat to Mear's on Kent Narrows this season and am wondering where to find any sandy beach areas so kids and dog can have their fun.
Trying to find a spot that we can get to in under 30 minutes. Any and all suggestions are appreciated!
You should find what you want in the Wye River. From the green 1K at the south end of the narrows steer due south magnetic and follow the chart into Wye River. Turn to starboard after entering Wye River and you will find Shaw Bay on your starboard side. Ther are nice sandy beaches around the bay. The beach on the east side has no houses.
Explore the Wye and you will find other gems and out of the way anchorages in the little creeks off the main river.
The Wye also has a good crab population so dropping a pot while anchored will bring rewards.
Wye Island beween the West Wye and the East Wye is a nature reserve and has lots of deer animals and birds. You can land at the head of Dividing creek and a few other places and walk the paths on the island.
If you enjoy going to St. Michaels I suggest that you become a member of the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum. A $200 dollar tax deductable contribution get you free entrance to the museum for all on board the boat ($10 per person saving per visit) and overnight dockage at @1.00 per foot compared with $3.00 or $3.50 per foot at the marinas. If you go to visit for the day, dockage is free. The first overnight per year is free at that contribution level. In the course of a year you can save the $200 contribution easily.
Good afternoon lanbuilder and chesbay340, I was informed by the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum that the above prices are actually out-dated. If you would like, you may call the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for updated prices and membership information at 410-745-2916.
Another sandy beach, but a further run frof the Narrows and much more populated is Sandy Hook. This is on the North side of the bay Bridge on the western shore. If you go fishing at the bridge then it is very close. The channel into the basin runs parallel to the north span and right next to the span. There are tie up facilities in the basin but no overnight. Very large sandy beach.
