Hello, I am a new CT41 owner from the Netherlands.

I have a lot of work to do but each time I see a picture of my CT it gives me a smile and the strenght to fulfill this project. I also want a forum like Force 50 about our kind of boats.

John

Hello all, I just found this forum and I think its great! My wife and I purchased a Transworld Island Trader 41 CC in 05 and we love it. I have already learned a lot from this forum, and I hope to reply often. Right now I have a querstion about the traveller. The people who had the boat before us took the traveller off and put it on a hard top bimini. I would like to put it back where it was but I am not sure how they had the traveller set up. Any advice, and/or pictures would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot.

I have a Hardin Sea Wolf 40, and replanked the teak in the cockpit using the WEST System method which eliminates the fasteners -- the major cause of leaks.  You can get more details in their literature, however, briefly it enables you to mix the epoxy with their graphite powder to make it black.  You lay down enough epoxy on the subdeck to allow it to fill in the space between the planks (btw, the planks are trimmed with square edgesn not dadoed).  You space the planks and hold them down using sheet metal screws and fender washers between the planks.  After the epoxy has cured, remove the screws and using a syringe, fill the screw holes with more black epoxy.  Allow to cure and sand flush to teak.  It looks just like polysulfide caulking once you are done.  I did this two years ago, and show no signs of UV damage to the exposed black epoxy, and my cockpit deck is completely water-tight and as solid as can be.  Using this approach, the teak deck actually becomes structural, not merely a protective/cosmetic non-skid covering.  I plan on doing my starboard side fore and mid deck using the same technique, only this time I may experiment with their new "flex" resin.

RE: BOW SPRIT

Has anyone replaced or rebuild thier bow sprit?

Any info would be greatly appreciated. To cut those angles and turn such a large piece looks to be a big job. I was considering making a mold from the old one, and making the replacement out of fiberglass.

Thanks, Shawn

Hi everybody, Trevor here in Melbourne, Australia with Formosa 41 'Gadfly'.  Just returned late last year from trip through New Caledonia and Vanuatu, great boats in a storm! I am trying to get as much information as l can on design and build to support my aim to try and get my vessel into commercial survey for charter purposes (seems to be kind of tough and information is somewhat scarce).  A question for anybody who might be able to help.  I have tracked down the previous 'Formosa' yard to Shanghai in China but it seems that the shift from Taiwan to to the mainland involved not bothering to keep much in the way of records (and they seem to build mostly power craft now).  I have line drawings of the hull in profile and a rig plan but drawings suitable for establishing a stability book and information on hull construction and lay-up (of build, fibreglass etc) are problemmatic. Do any of you good people have such information or know where such information might reside.  Another possibility might be drawings or plans of the original Bill Garden design that these boats are based on; l suppose going straight to the source here might be a good idea!  Does the man have a point of contact?  Further, does anyone know of somewhere, indeed anywhere where an example of these vessels may have been engaged in commercial, charter type work and where hull and build information might be available.  Anyway, hope somebody can help, cheers and beers, Trevor.

I built my bowsprit using about 5  or 6 2x8 Douglas Fir planks.  I first used the old bowsprit as a template for a side dimension and cut the planks accordingly.  Then I epoxied all the planks together and used my skill saw to taper the sides (due to the thickness - I had to cut both tapers from the top and then again from the bottom).  I cut about 1/4'" oversize, then I took off the remaining using my powered hand planer.  The angles on all four corners were then marked and I used the planer again to cut the angles.  The gradual curves at the rear were made nice and neat using a belt sander.  It took me about 4 or 5 hours to complete the job once the boards were epoxied.  I will post some pictures on my website in the near future showing the end results - It turned out very nice!!!

Shawn,

I built a new sprit for my Formosa 41. It was not that difficult. Just nerve racking taking the circular saw to $500 worth of spruce! (you only cut it once!) Anyhow. to see photo's of the project follow this link. Its our Formosa 41 owners group site. You should join this. Lots of members and a ton of info. Photo's are under Dave and Debby's formosa 41. Have a great day!     Dave

Hi I just bought a 1978 40ft Sea Wolf  i have sailed smaller boats and will be learning a lot more about sailing and crusing. She has a isuzu 40 and i also bought a perkins 408 from the owner of the boat. I am considering switching out the Isuzu for the Perkins.  The Isuzu runs fine and no smoke but the previous owner says the Perkins will have more HP to handle the columbia river currents better. Any thoughts?

Congratulations Bill.  I have the same boat -- a Hardin Sea Wolf Ketch 1978 -- in Marina Del Rey, CA.  Her name is Macondo.  You can see some pictures of her on www.sobersailing.com.  I, too, have the Isuzu 3AB1 engine (originally labeled Pisces).  She is very reliable, but somewhat underpowered -- so I usually prefer to sail.  It has about 2500 total hours.  I had to replace a valve seat about 7 years ago.  Other than that, she's been very good.  I would imagine the change out would be very costly in that I don't think you could get the perkins through the companionway and might have to remove the cabin top, or bring the perkins in dismantled.  However, if you do change it out, please let me know how it goes, and I might be willing to purchase parts of the Isuzu from you for spare parts -- injector pump, manifold, riser, etc.

Also, I replaced my fixed 3-bladed prop with a 3-bladed Maxi-Prop (feathering).  This has given me about 1/2 kt additional speed under power and 0.7 kts additional speed under sail -- plus the shaft doesn't keep turning while under sail.
