Hi. I've had a Hunter 33 for 2 seasons now, which I've used mainly as a daysailer on Long Island Sound. This season, I plan to do some cruising, and feel I need a dinghy. The local West Marine is encouraging a 9.5' RIB (about $2000) with a Merc 9.9hp (also around $2000) to be used as a towbehind. I'm sure that would be great, but of course, I don't want to spend that much. Any suggestions? Is there a market for quality used dinghies (safety first, of course)? I alway appreciate hearing ideas from more experienced sailors. Thanks.

There is a good market for used inflatables if they are the high quality. I got an Avon Redwing secondhand about 7 years ago that cost me $400. It is now 15 years old and still going strong. It is made from hypalon, which is much more durable than PVC. The boat has been on the fordeck of my boats all summers, and just defalted and rolled up below in winter. Each spring I just inflate the boat and it is ready to go. I may have to top off the air about twice a season.
There is a company that has shops in RI and Annapolis called Inflatable Experts that has good used inflatables. That is where I got mine. They have a good web site. The link for the web site got difficult to find since the last time I went there, so here it is. http://www.usedinflatables.com/?gclid=CO6JvP-UoJgCFQJ-xgodFk CEmA

affordableinflatable online has Baltik dinghies. That is where I got mine last year and am extremely happy with it!! You can get them directly from them also on Ebay for cheaper prices, that's how I got mine. The quality is great!

I just purchased at Defender a Mercury Sport 260 for around $600 and a Mercury 3.5HP at West Marine for $900, total $1,500.

If you are just using dingy for crusin, I wouldn't go with a 9.9hp., only if you want that to fly. All that weight isn't necessary, if you are just using for trips to shore etc. We have a honda, and I stated with a 9.5 on a rib, and the thing went about 40knts, so I traded it in for a 5. It planes, but is lighter to handle if I have to remove motor.

I'm in the 3-5 hp camp. Dinghy motors get lifted and carried a lot . Weight is important.
I'd go with the smallest high quality hypalon inflatable available.
Consider one that can roll up and be stowed on board.
There are many sea conditions where towing a dinghy behind is a big stress. I know of three dinghies that were lost at sea that way. (Two by the same guy.)

thanks for all the suggestions and advice. I ended up in the camp of the "weight is important" posters--i bought a 8.5' rollup for about $800 and found a used 2 hp 2stroke for $275. For the type of sailing i do, its really all the power I need, and the whole thing is easy to deal with. Thanks.

Thanks, I did get it. Now I just need to talk the wife into why we need to move up from our 2.5hp we currently have.
Which one in the manual is it? 5B or 5BS?

Craig's list always has some listed. Everything from cheap basic ones with a trolling motor to higher-quality models.
