Not a new member, but couldn't login, so I re-registered. Anyway....I bought a new Larson 274 with the 8.1 and I love the boat. I had the trailer and boat weighed, the boat full of gas and water only. The whole thing weighed in at around 10,800 lbs. The trailers gvwr is only 10,400 lbs. The tires are only about 200 lbs (each) from being at their max load. I am very concerned that the trailer is overloaded and they should have given me a triple axle trailer. I had a blowout last week and am concerned about the chance that the second tire will blow, if it happens again. Where do I find information on trailer regs?

What is the axle rating? Are they 5K or 6K lb. axles?
Remember some of the weight will be on the trailer hitch. BTW, I had a POS Carlisle tire blow out the sidewall on a brand new tri-axle trailer that was not even close to being overloaded...it just happens.
The problem is as the boat gets older, it collects more "stuff" and you will likely be 1000 lbs. overweight before you know it. I would go back to the dealer and tell them they sold you too small a trailer, but don't wait or they will try to back out of it.

The tag only tells me the GVWR, not axle rating. I might ask them today, I have to take it back because the brakes failed.

I will make an educated guess here and guess at 3500# axles.
3 X 3500#= is 10,500.
To increase the carrying power of that trailer, you need: new and bigger: axles; brake assemblies; spings; spring carriers, and brake actuator.
I had a trailer which was rated just under the actual weight
of the boat. The trailer manufacturer made an error in specifying the rating. I had problems with brakedrum hubs parting (2 different times) and brakes in general. You see, I had a trailer with 2 3500# axles (7K# rating) and had 6000# of boat on it, and the steel trailer weighed 1500# itself. So, I was 500 over.
After the saecond hub blew, I traded the trailer on a new aluminum Majic tilt, with an 8200# CARRYING rating, 5200# axles, 4 wheel disks, radial tires and tortion bar suspension. What a diggerence in towing.
Please note: If you bought the boat new with that trailer, and its over weight, you have a big issue with the dealer.
In UCC leagal language: merchantibility for a specific usage. (Also may be against state statutes). I am just trying to inform you of what can happen.
Hope its taken that way.

Thanks Captharv. Good advice, I am trying to gather all information possiblee before I make a plea to the boat dealer. So UCC handles some trailer regulations? I Sent an e-mail to the National Marine Manufacturers Association stating my problem and this is the response I got "The GVWR is the weight of the trailer plus its maximum load. If the GVWR is 400lbs less than the boat weight, then the trailer cannot weigh more than 400lbs. Your boat weight may not account for full fuel tanks, gear, etc., so I highly recommend you evaluate the suitability if this trailer for your boat." I would have expected a better answer from those folks for sure. I really don;t know where to look for suych regulations myself. I guess when I get back from Lake Powell I will have to research it further.....

UCC = Uniform commercial code
It's just a general federal code that includes the rule that a product must be usable and proper for the stated usage. If you are sold a car battery that can't start your car, it's not "merchantable for a specific usage." If your trailer is sold as a package with a boat but is unsafe for the usage, that is not merchantable for the stated usage.

How old is your trailer? All trailers now have the axle ratings on the GVWR sticker. Try calling the trailer manufacturer.
