Hello! I am new to this forum, though I have been a Boat US member for a few years. My family (wife and 5 & 7 yr old daughters) will be spending our second 9-day vacation in Rehoboth, DE area later this month. Last year, I moored my boat in the Indian River Inlet. it was great - we crusied north into the DE Bay, and around the bays near IR.

This year, we are considering heading south to Ocean City Md, and from there, down to Chincoteague. We plan a day trip, and hopefully see some of the wild ponies.

Has anyone cruised this are/route? Can anyone offer trip suggestions/recommendations/cautions? I have a Seaswirl Striper 23WA, powered by a Johnson 200 OB. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a fun trip. We've never made that run, please let us know how it goes/went.

If I was planning on doing that stretch, I'd poke around here for first hand info from other boaters...

I know several people that have made the inside run to Chincoteague and they say it can be very nerve wracking. Very shallow water and poorly marked channels. The one individual was in a 17' Whaler and ran a-ground 2x if they gives you a hint. You may or may not see much of the ponies. The weather conditions seem to play a big factor as to where they hide out during the day. What ever you do -- DO NOT attempt to approach the Ponies or feed them. They will bite and kick and in some case have try to run people down. This I say to you from personal experience.

Hey Patrick,

I think you must be registered to see the details. It's free to register. I just had a look at the area in question and there aren't many 'reviews', but there is still good info on marinas, ramps, shopping...

Click on any number to see details.

This is the XPreview using NOAA charts. You can see the locations and get basic info, but for details and reviews you must go to The Interactive Cruising Guidebook tab.

We tow to a lot of different places, and I use the satellite view to check out whether there's decent parking at the ramps and if they have docks (my wife needs a dock to get aboard).

I have made the trip many times. It is About 18 to 20 miles to the Ocean City inlet to access the beginning of the Island. If you run all the way down to the bridge there is a good chance you will see the ponies. Be very carefull to stay in the channel. It is very narrow so follow the markers. It makes for a nice day trip. You can have lunch at the Sunset Marina which is right across from the inlet and easy to get to and dock. Rinkercruiser
