Hi - our boat uses twin 30's for power.  They are really not long enough for our slip and usually one of the 2 cords will be pulled out during the week (on the boat end).  For next season we want to purchase an extension of some sort for the two 50 foot power cords we now have.  All we need is 6 - 12 feet.   Any suggestions?  I want to make sure I can secure the extension also.

Thanks - Kathy

Most power cord female plugs (boat end) have a collar which allows a ring that screws onto the boat's fixture to hold the plug in place.  The male end is a twist lock.  If your cords pull out, you really need to properly secure them to the boat.

I have never seen a pre-made cord of less than 25-feet.  If you want extensions, buy one pre-made 25-foot cord along with female and male plugs.  Cut the cord in half and install one plug on each.  Remember to install the female on the half of the pre-made with the male plug and visa versa.  While you are at it, check out the sealing collar rings.

I have a 12' cord made by Marinco. The West Marine part# is 9329863 and the Marinco # is 199116. Probally around $50- now. I originally bought it to use with our Honda EU2000i while it was on the swim platform. Still use it daily while the boat is in the slip, gives us the option of stern or bow in first. Great item to have as it saves for dragging out and tripping over another 50' cord. Paul.

Don't use the  collar unless there is plenty of slack in the cord.  If there is not enough slack, the cord will still pull out of the boat only, with the collar attached, it will take the entire system with it.  Don't ask how I know that!

Have you checked Lowes and Home Depot for heavy duty wire to make an extension cord?

It seems like you can plug them in now, so maybe a a foot or two is all you need.  There is a Marinco right had adapter (1RPC) that turns the cordset to a down angle cord.  It will add maybe a foot or two.  Use it on the inlet to the boat or on the power outlet.  I would not homebrew anything power in a marina.  The liability is WAY too high.  The other option is to move the power inlet on the boat or the power pole on the dock both are usually expensive.  But be real, 50' of cord is a long way, something at your marina is a bit odd.  I've always had plenty of slack on a 50' cord.  Another option is to tie the boat differently in the slip.  Here's what I'd do.  Shore power cords are very expensive.  My 50A-twin 30 wishbone just set me back 1/10 of a boat bill (ebay)...

Or switch to use a single 50A cable and a splitter. At least then you're dealing with less cabling.
