I have a Karavan dual axle trailer. I plan on replacing/ repacking the wheel bearings myself but I also need to repair/ replace the drum brakes, springs, etc...anyone done this before/ Trying to find parts but not really sure where to start. One trailer supply place wants me to bring in the old parts. Kinda difficult to do time wise...any suggestions...thanks

These guys have a good selection and price. You should be able to identify your brakes on their site.

I've never had the problems this fellow had with surge disc brakes, however, if I were to do a complete replacement or spec a new trailer, I would likely go with electric brakes. I've used electric  on equipment trailers for years and it is comforting to always know they are functional.

I have a rather large tri-axle and only tow a few miles a year. I never have any problem testing my surge disc brakes. If I forget to lock them out, I simply cannot back up! Eight or nine tons of boat and trailer provide too much resistance and traction.

Surge brales do work.

I was able to lock up all four wheels when a jurk pulled into a gas station drive way in front of me and then decided he didn't like that station and pulled back in front of me.

Yes, but how do you know they'll work before you need them?

Every time out, I apply them at low speed in an open area to make sure they work.

How do you know any brakes will work before you need them?

This problem is not limited to surge brakes. About all you can do is to check the main cyliner fluid level, and test them by applying slowly at slower speeds.

Usually, the problem is a broken line.

If teh cylinder is empty, or looses fluid, fiull it up, and pump them with the emergency lever a few times and look for the leak(s). Not rocket science.
