I am currently saving up for my first sailboat. It seems
that looking for boat is kinda like finding a wife, the
right one brings years of bliss while wrong one leaves
you broke, depressed and in misery. Whenever I talk to
anyone selling a boat they get the look of a lion at
suppertime within seconds. My budget is low, old is ok
but dangerous isn't.I would rather be sailing an ugly
boat then working to pay for a beautiful one. I live in
Maryland and would like to sail the Chesapeake Bay. I
like to crab and fish. I need a boat with a shallow draft
to crab. (I usually crab in 3-7 feet of water) Getting in
to the beach is a big plus. My doctor confirms that I
have striper fever pretty bad and don't want to limit my
fishing oppertunities within the bay. I would also like
to cross the bay to eastern shore to explore. I plan to
trailer my boat home during the winter and keep in on a
slip during the summer. I've been looking at 22
footers(they seem cramped and dangerous, but practiacle)
25's seem to be a compremise between bayworthieness and
practicallity. While the 26-27"s seem the ideal boat for
the chop of the bay, it's a pain to move out of the
water. The guys selling 27' footers tell me a a 25 will
get thrown around too much in the bay, The people with
the 25's say they are just as good as the 27's. while the
people with the 22's say almost nothing about rough
weather but claim to sail everywhere. I want to be safe
on the water. I' am getting a boat to get away with 1 or
2 people about 3-5 days at a time. What are your
opionions about size, keels, and limitations of diffrent
designs for use on Chesapeake Bay.

We lived on a Bristol 27 for 3 years. Bristol is a boat that will really keep you safe. They made I believe a 24' which was very big for it's length.

Good luck with your search.

As far as 22' goes, check out the Catalina 22.  Easy to trailer, Catalina quality, many thousands made, easy to sail, here's their web site:  http://www.catalina22.org/
