We enjoy taking our 21' center console for off shore fishing adventures in the Gulf of Mexico, off the Texas coast.  Our adorable Yellow Lab Buddy (almost 2 years old) loves going on the boat with us on the lake we live near in the Austin, TX area, but he has never been on the ocean with us.  My concern is that the slamming our boat does as we head 40 miles off shore to get to our fishing spots will be too much for Buddy to handle.  Any advice???

My advice is leave Buddy home.  He will certainly get over it.  If you can't bear to be separated from him for a few hours, you stay home too.

He can't contribute... only get in the way, and/or be endangered for no good purpose.

Our Golden Retriever goes with us on the boat every weekend. However, he does tend to get in the way now and then. I would think that limited "dog space" could be a problem on a very small boat being run off-shore. The determining factor is the dog's temperment. If he's fine in rough conditions, then bring him along. Otherwise, he may be better left shore-side.

Best regards,

Frank C.

Tho my Black Lab loves the boat, she hates hard rides and ends up under my feet at the helm. Last year i ran 8 hours to Ocean City and she was semi-ok, but we left her on shore for the fishing off shore. It would have been too much i think for her and me both...

take buddy along believe me i have a 2 year old yellow lab named buddy also,he loves the water and ocean ...since he was a pup and he does tend to get in the way at times but only when we catch fish..he loves to smell the fish and also bark at them...he has been on hard rides with the slamming of the inlets and things like that and actually i was worried about him but he has better sea legs than me..lol...he also rides the front of the boat and he seems very confident ...i wonder how they know they can do this without falling overboard???he will do fine i am sure..

Thanks for all of the advice!  We did end up taking Buddy off shore with us on a very calm day to try it out and he did great!  There were just two of us on the boat plus Buddy and space was no problem.  I probably won't take him every time, especially when we have more people aboard.  He did have a fun time barking at the fish that we caught!  Our only problem was that we couldn't get him to pee in the boat.  When he was younger he did his business in that boat and we praised him for it, etc. but he has not had enough practice with it.  By the time we got to shore he was about to burst, poor thing.  We'll work on that.
